Do twins skip a generation?

Myth

No. Non-identical twins can run in families, but there’s no evidence they skip a generation. Most identical twins aren’t caused by genetics.

Non-identical (fraternal) twins happen when two eggs are released in one cycle. That tendency can run in families, but it only shows up in the person ovulating. A man could pass it to his daughter without having twins himself, which may be where the “skipping” idea comes from.

Age over 35, IVF and fertility drugs also increase the chance of twins.
